History
The Society’s story began in the late 1980s.
Founding
The Society was founded between 1989 and 1991 under the name Estonian Union of Medical Students. One driving motive was resisting the conscription of students into the Soviet Army. Founding members included Tarmo Kariis and Ivo Valter.
Registration
The statutes were confirmed in autumn 1990; the Society was registered with the Tartu City Government on 29 December 1990 and officially on 15 January 1991.
Pepleri 32
In 1994, with the help of Dr Indrek Oro of the Estonian Medical Association, the Society obtained premises at Pepleri 32, Tartu — including a medical library of over 500 books.
International cooperation
In spring 1993, the Society took part in its first IFMSA conference in Athens, opening up student exchanges abroad. Since 1990, the Society’s presidents have served consecutive terms of roughly one year each.
